Allen Lane had a mission to bring good quality reading and educational material to a wide readership. He founded Penguin Books in 1935 and two years later, in 1937, he launched Pelicans 'A' as well as the Shakespeare 'B' series. During the war he promoted Educational and Vocational Training for the forces and began Puffin Picture Books 'PP' (1940-65) to interest and educate children. He published New Biology 'NB' (1945-60) and Science News 'SN' (1946-60). In 1944 the Reference series 'R' began and in 1962 he published Peregrines 'Y'.

These series emerged from various ideas and identifying need and gaps in the market. However, an overall strategy had not been developed until 1967, when Penguin Education was established as a separate division specifically to produce books for schools and colleges. Allen Lane's aim being to carry the radical and populist spirit of Pelicans into the schoolbook market. Penguin Education had a major impact on schoolbooks, breaking new ground in their concept and design and strongly influencing other publishers' lists.

Penguin had already tried similar projects: Hummingbird Books for Caribbean Schools (1965), the Shropshire Mathematics Experiment (1966) and books from the Nuffield Science Teaching Project. Aiming at the colleges and university market, Peregrines began in 1962 and the University Book series in 1971.

Among the most successful and influential series were Voices and Junior Voices, Connexions, and the Penguin English Project. Alongside these and other series, the imprint continued another Penguin tradition by producing 'Education Specials', titles which focussed on often controversial topics within education and beyond. They included highly topical books such as The Hornsey Affair (X94) and Warwick University Ltd (X230), reflecting the student unrest of the late 1960s and contributing to the intense national debate about the purpose of higher education.

The general editor of Penguin Education was Charles Clark who led the delivery of a range of sub-series. Some had fine designs, such as History of Britain and Connexions. The early E-shaped logo was re-designed by Hans Schleger to the familiar 'parent and child penguin' colophon.

Penguin Education also published an extensive range of Readers and Introductory Texts for students in higher education, notably in subjects such as psychology, economics, management, sociology and science, while for teachers it provided a series of key texts such as Language, the Learner and the School and The Language of Primary School Children.

Following Allen Lane's death in 1970 and the takeover the same year by Pearson Longman, the division discontinued publishing school books and was closed in March 1974.

Method of Listing: Please note we have listed the books as X1, X2, X3 etc. as the series commences with the prefix 'X' on the spines of book and are identified as such. However, from 1969, SBN (Standard Book Numbers) and then later ISBN numbers (International Standard Book Numbers) were used by Penguin to identify books and replaced the prefix 'X' with '08' number. The 10 digit set of numbers consisted of 014 (Penguin as publishers), followed by 6 numbers of the publisher's list, which for Penguin was 08 (the Education series) followed by 4 numbers for the book number, plus an extra number at the end used to check accuracy of data. Subsequently ISBN's were extended to 13 numbers with an additional three, e.g. 978, being added at the front. We have listed the SBN and ISBN numbers where they have been used by Penguin to identify their book (but we have also retained the 'X' listing). Additionally, we identify the Sub-Series which nearly all the Penguin Education books fall into: such as X1 is a 'Penguin Education Special', and X2 is part of the 'Penguin Library of Technology'.

It was Paul Lickiss who mentioned to us that despite 'X' Penguin Education appearing under our List of Series, we did not have separate pages, detailing the books and sub-series in the group of books which were published, initially using the 'X' prefix, under the banner of Penguin Education. Our thanks go to Paul for his support with ideas, information and images and also to Andrew Malin who has joined in this venture and provided further material and images.
