PEREGRINE BOOKS

THIS PAGE 'Y' Y1- Y50

These were produced as 'academic books' and published by Penguin. They were intended to be used to study subjects, and printed on better quality paper, with stiffer covers and sewn rather than glued in binding. They had a larger format, with a size of 7¾" x 5⅓", and were much more expensive than standard Penguins, such as Pelicans, from which some of the earlier titles were taken.

The series began in January 1962 with the publication of 'Y1', The Common Pursuit by F. R. Leavis. [There is a leaflet published by Penguin advertising the new series on our emphemera page - click here]

The early emphasis was on history and English literature. The earlier books carried the motif of a perched falcon, looking towards its right, with a white spine and the 'Y' series number at the bottom. After about 10 years there was a brief lull in titles, with a fresh looking cover design and more of a focus on sociological material, often with a left-wing bias.
