STEVE HARE PENGUIN COLLECTION - OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY
Steve Hare's collection, amassed over 45 years, is believed to be the largest collection of Penguins built up by a private collector. The collection is currently being catalogued but comprises an estimated 9,000 books, including the first 2,000 published Penguins. The first books were published in July 1935 and the core collection ends in 1970, the year Penguin founder Allen Lane died. However, Steve also collected more recent titles and series. Oxford Brookes University is very grateful to Steve's widow, Alison, for the permanent loan of his amazing collection to their Special Collections, where it supports teaching and research. The university offers a reading room service to internal and external visitors. Please visit the Special Collections webpage to see opening times and to arrange online or in-person viewings and browsing sessions.
