PENGUIN UNIVERSITY BOOKS

Penguin began its foray into books for higher education with the Peregrine series 'Y' and the Penguin Modern Psychology 'UPS' series which commenced in January 1962 and August 1966 respectively. A number of its other series already provided non-fiction for the general reader, and school books such as The Penguin History of Britain 'SH' and the Shropshire Maths Experiment'SM'.

However, in 1967, Penguin Books established a separate education division specifically to produce books for schools and colleges. Penguin Education 'X' wanted to have a major impact on schoolbooks, breaking new ground in their concept and design. Penguin Education covered a range of subjects for schools, further and hiher education in sub-series, such as science, economics and English language; it also took over revised reprints of the SM series.

The emphasis of the Peregrine series was on literary criticism and biography, history, the arts and philosophy. After about 10 years there was a brief lull in titles, and this was partially filled with a new series, Penguin University Books, launched in 1971. Peregrines returned briefly in 1975 with a fresh looking cover design and a focus on sociological material, often with a left-wing bias.

This is how Penguin explained the series on the back cover of their books: "The new series of Penguin University Books is offered in response to the recognized need for paperbound (and therefore somewhat cheaper) editions of books which make a significant contribution to scholarship. Covering many fields, the series will concern itself with the social and historical links binding the world of thought to the world of action."

To make them stand out from Penguin Education and Peregrines, John McConnell was commissioned to design the covers. The University Books titles featured black covers with a 'typewriter' style typography. The series ended in 1974.

Although the number of the last book in the series is PUB37, only 34 books were published (albeit nos. 21 and 32 appear to be the same, making 33 separate titles). However, the Penguin University Books series leant on the Peregrine list, with five titles reprinted from that series.
