These books were intended as a new set of commentaries printed under the series heading of 'The Penguin Shakespeare Library', ('SL') to accompany the 'New Penguin Shakespeare' series ('NS') which commenced in April 1967. This series was launched in April 1967 with Shakespeare and the Idea of the Play by Anne Righter. The first two books, however bear the numbers 'PSL1' and 'PSL2', with the 'P' for Penguin being dropped after that.
