'BOUND PENGUINS'
'CHIVERS PENGUIN' LIBRARY EDITIONS

The name 'Penguin' is synonymous with 'paperback'. Yet Penguin Books published a number of hardbacks. Some can be found in their own series, such as King Penguins 'K' and the Penguin History of Art 'Z'. Other series may have predominantly soft covers (such as in Miscellaneous 'Q') or began with soft covers and then introduced hard covers, such as in Buildings of England 'BE'.

However, on three separate occasions Penguin began production of hardback copies using existing titles but with different designed bindings. The first such foray was 'Bound Penguins' introduced in 1951. It had no special numbering system, just a 'Bound Penguin' or clothbound Penguin version of the same book.

The second attempt at hardbacks were the Library Editions (1967-69) with the 'H' prefix. This was a further attempt to meet the demand from libraries for hardback editions of Penguins. Library Editions were produced for only certain titles published or reprinted during the 1967 to 1969 period. Over 180 were published in this form between July 1967 and June 1969.

Library Editions retained their original number with an additional 'H' prefix. The main series books were identified with the 'H' prefix and the original series letter - e.g. Poetry 'D' series such as 'HD50' or Classics 'L' series such as 'HL1' on this page, or the prefix 'H' and the number, e.g. 'H2555', or a Pelican 'A' series such as 'HA150', both on page 1 of our Penguin Library Edition lists.

They were cased in a standard dark blue-grey binding with spine lettering and device in gold, and had dustwrappers repeating the design of the paperback edition's covers. A life expectancy three times that of the paperback was claimed.

The venture was discontinued because of disappointing sales and the agreement subsequently made with the library supplier Cedric Chivers to produce 'Chivers Penguins' (1970-72).

I am hugely grateful to Andrew Malin, Tim Graham and Paul Lickiss for their help and encouragement in developing the 'hardback' pages, and to Tim for his lists.
