The name 'Penguin' is synonymous with 'paperback'. Yet Penguin Books published a number of hardbacks. Some can be found in their own series, such as King Penguins 'K' and the Pelican History of Art 'Z'. Other series have predominantly soft covers but some hardbacks (such as in Miscellaneous 'Q' and Puffin Picture Books 'PP'). The Buildings of England 'BE' series began with soft covers, then introduced hard covers, and finally dropped soft covers altogether.

However, on three separate occasions Penguin began production of hardback copies of existing paperbacks. The first such foray were the 'Bound Penguins' introduced in 1951. These Bound Penguins were drawn from several series and used the same number as the original book. They appeared when a book was reprinted or, in some cases at the same time as a new title.

Penguin produced these more expensive books mainly in response to demands from libraries but also to satisfy a perceived demand for more durable editions of certain Penguins. They were printed on superior paper, fully clothbound in plain colours with gilt-decorative spines. The bindings were colour-coded: red for Classics, teal green for Pelicans, orange for Penguins, grey for Shakespeare, yellow for Poets, dark blue for Reference, and light brown for Buildings of England. - with a cream/brown striped dust jacket. (In the event no bound Shakespeare or Penguin Poets titles were produced.) Text on the dust jackets matched the colour of the book. A dust jacket and the coloured decorative spines are illustrated alongside.

Just 49 Bound Penguins were produced (of which only one is known to have been reprinted) but the volume of sales did not justify the increased costs and the venture petered out.

Three Bound Penguins are known to have been printed and bound in the USA. One of these - 'A261', A Forgotten Kingdom - was only published in paperback form in the UK. There is a separate USA section at the bottom of this page.

Many years later, Penguin went on to produce Library Editions with 'H' prefix (1967 - 69) and the Chivers Penguin Library Editions (1970 - 72). These were also not a commercial success.

I am hugely grateful to Andrew Malin, Tim Graham and Paul Lickiss for their help and encouragement in developing the 'hardback' pages, and to Tim for his lists and in particular Andrew for his lists, additional information and images.
