The Penguin CLASSICS Series

THIS PAGE: No. 1 Penguin Classics L1 - L99

Penguin Classics L1-L99 (page 1)
Penguin Classics L100-L199 (page 2)
Penguin Classics L200-L250 (page 3)

The series began in January 1946 with the publication of the first Classic 'L1', Homer's Odyssey, translated by E.V. Rieu, who was also the first editor of the series. Over the years, this first book sold more than a million copies. The series involved translating well known classics from over 25 languages.

The covers from these early Penguin Classics were designed with a 'classical' feel to them, with engraved roundels which were the only design feature until 1963, when black illustrated covers designed by Germano Facetti (who became Penguin's Art Director in 1960) were introduced. The roundels, a 'vignette' in round form, were designed by well known illustrators.

The Penguin Classics, which were launched at the end of the Second World War, had in 1984 a current list of over 400 titles. From 1985 'Classics' also subsumed 'Pelican Classics' and the English and American Libraries. During the 1980s the Classics list was revised and new translations commissioned to reflect the more modern interpretations of the original texts.

Like the earlier main series Penguins which were colour coded 'Orange' for fiction, 'Blue' for biography and so on, the early Penguin Classics, in all some 122 titles, with their 'Roundel' on the cover (sometimes referred to as 'Medallion'), had a simple design and were given a simple colour coding on the cover. They were coded by the source language or region. The first Classic 'L1', Homer's Odyssey, was Greek and coloured brown, 'L2' by Guy de Maupassant was in French and given a green cover.

The Language (or Region) Colour Code for the first 122 titles is as follows:
Brown = Greek
Green = French
Purple = Latin
Blue = Italian
Red = Russian
Orange = Old English
Olive = German
Mustard = Middle Eastern
Buff = Scandinavian
Yellow = Far Eastern
Peacock = Spanish
Rose = Portuguese

Title: FALL OF THE ROMAN REPUBLIC: SIX LIVES - Marius Sulla, Crassus, Pompey, Caesar, and Cicero
Author: Plutarch (Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus)
Translated: by Rex Warner
Series Editor: E. V. Rieu
Date Published: November 1958
Pages: 320pp.
Printer: The Whitefriars Press Ltd
Price: 3/6d.

Note: This cover has been given the wrong colour code, Purple for Latin. Although the book is about six Roman lives, it was in fact written by Plutarch, a Greek historian and biographer. To add to the confusion was the fact that during his life, Plutarch also took Roman citizenship (hence the Roman name which we also give, above). However, this book was given the correct 'Brown for Greek' colouring in the 1962 reprint. This is shown as the scond image.
