Penguin First Editions :: Early First Edition Penguin Books

Australians have imported Penguins from the very beginning of publication, and even after the opening of the Australia office in 1947 books continued to come from Britain until March 1963, when Penguin Books Australia printed their own series, starting with AU1. However, during the war years the supply chain was difficult and, much like the springing up of the Egyptian series, books were published in Australia between 1940-46. A Melbourne business 'Lothian Publishing Company' acted as the local agent for Penguin, and their name usually appeared at the foot of the title page.

The list below is based on a list originally provided by Mr Louis Lothian from the firm's own contemporaneous records, and also the Numbering is that of Chris Barling who first catalogued the books. A few minor changes/additions have been made subsequently.

The covers of the books were designed to be like Penguins, but the typeface was variable and the paper quality poor. Prices were not printed on the cover, but at the time the books generally sold for 1/3d.

However, we received from Christopher Holland in Australia, a copy of a newspaper article from The West Australian dated 28 September 1940. The short piece seems to indicate that this Penguin Special was spotted by a doctor in Tasmania who thought it so pertinent to the world situation that he decided to pay for its publication in Australia, and actually distributed thousands of copies free, while others were on sale for about half the normal price. The preface to the Australian Edition (image shown) states "Sir Richard Acland and the English Publishers (Penguin Books Ltd.) have welcomed this and have asked no royalties or copyright fees."
