The Penguin NEW WRITING Series

'NW' 1 - 40

The Penguin New Writing was first published in hardback format by Allen Lane's publishing house 'The Bodley Head' in 1936, on encouragement by Allen Lane. In moved into the Penguin format in November 1940 and was successful during the war and following. It ran for 40 issues until September 1950 under the editorship of John Lehmann. Allen Lane also commissioned John Lehmann's study New Writing in Europe which was published as a Pelican (A81) in December 1940.

The first issue of New Writing originally appeared as Penguin 305 (in the main series). Strangely enough, New Writing Number 2 also appeared in error bearing the number 305 on the spine.
