These books were intended for the very young and used the same process of autolithography (i.e. the artist draws direct on to the block, stone or plate, which is used for printing and produces the originally intended effect) as used for the Puffin Picture Books. However, these were half the size for younger children, at 7" x 4¼"

The first book published in November 1943, number 'BP1', was A.B.C., by Dorothy Chapman. Only nine books were produced, the last in April 1948
